Exxon Chemicals Division; Linden, New Jersey. Linden, New Jersey. 1. At 1420 on October 21, 1985, a cloud of noxious fumes drifted from the Exxon Chemicals Division facility over industrial and urban communities in northern New Jersey. The Exxon Corporation attributed the situation to a compressor failure and a release of hydrogen sulfide fumes in a manufacturing process of lubricating oil additives.
