What the archive shows

The available aids-to-navigation notices archive contains 24,124 messages across 30 issue years, from 1997 to 2026. The year links below provide the source and sea-area breakdowns for each period.

The current list includes messages issued from 2021-02-16 to 2026-10-01. A warning can remain in force for an extended operation, so this list is not a list of new incidents.

nga_inforce accounts for 124 of 138 recorded messages (90%), the largest source in the current list group in this selection.

The NGA archive froze in 2024-05; live collection began 2026-08-17. Counts near that gap are incomplete. Separate messages may describe updates to the same activity.

Terms used in nav aids warnings

Inoperative / unreliable / off air
An aid or radio service is not working as charted or published.
Unlit / extinguished
A light, buoy or structure that is not showing its charted light.
GNSS / GPS
Satellite positioning — GPS and other systems — and the testing, jamming and interference that make it unreliable in an area.
RACON (radar beacon)
A radar beacon on a buoy, lighthouse or structure that answers a ship's radar with a Morse-code mark on the screen.
Off station / missing buoy
A buoy that is not in its charted position — dragged, damaged, missing or removed.
Light characteristic
The coded description of a light — FL W 10 SEC 8 METERS 8 MILES — giving its rhythm, colour, period, height and range.
AIS (Automatic Identification System)
The radio transponder system that broadcasts a ship's identity, position, course and speed — and can mark a hazard with a virtual beacon.
Virtual aid to navigation
A buoy that exists only as an AIS signal — shown on electronic charts and radar, with nothing physically in the water.
