1. Between January 6 an d January 12, the Standard Oil tanker, STUYVESANT, lost approximately 15,000 barrels of North Slope crude en route from Alaska to the Panama Canal Zone. During this period, the vessel had moved from a position approximately 300 miles west of Sitka, Alaska, to about 120 miles offshore central California. The vessel had departed from Valdez at 0805 on January 6 and encountered severe weather from noon on January 7 through January 12. On January 9, the vessel was observed to be listing to starboard. Weather conditions prohibited tank soundings until three days later, at which time it was confirmed that the port wing tank had lost roughly 15,000 barrels of oil. At 1300 on January 12, the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office, Alameda, California was notified by the Coast Guard Captains of the Ports of Seattle and Anchorage or the incident.
