Mantoloking, New Jersey.
1. On May 28, 1997, the USCG Captain of the Port (COTP ) Philadelphia was notified of an unidentified substance washing up on approximately six miles of beaches near Mantoloking, New Jersey. Weather was temperature 73?F with cloudy skies. The USCG and New Jersey DEP responded to the scene but could not positively identify the substance. The EPA's Environmental Response Team (ERT) was requested on-scene to perform hazard categorization tests on the material, which was eventually identified as paraffin. The USCG opened the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) fund to perform emergency removal of the material from the beach. It took three days to complete the cleanup. The USCG is investigating the source of the material. USCG district 5. Keyword: none.
