Mystery Tarballs; East Hampton, New York. East Hampton, New York. 1. On 20 April, the US Coast Guard MSO LIS notified NOAA HAZMAT that tarballs began washing ashore Friday, 17 April along a 1/4 mile long stretch of beach at East Hampton, Long Island (NY). By the morning of 20 April, a 4-5 foot wide band of tarballs of varying distribution stretched approximately 14 miles from East Hampton to Montauk Point. The Coast Guard has federalized the spill and has hired Miller Environmental to cleanup the tarballs. Two Miller Environmental crews are currently performing the cleanup. USCG district 1.
