NORTHERLY ISLANDER; Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. 1. During severe weather on October 26,1990, the dredge barge NORTHERLY ISLANDER, dragged anchor and collided with the bridge at Oregon Inlet, North Carolina The bridge spans Oregon Inlet that connects Pamlico Sound to the Atlantic Ocean. The collision removed the bridge and the barge was aground and grinding on the bottom at the site. The barge carried approximately 41,000 gallons of diesel and an unknown quantity of lubrication oil.
