1. At 1630L on Wednesday, 26 January 1994, the 72 foot F/V Captain Shannon caught fire, burned to the waterline, and sank near Turtle Harbor/Reef in the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, Florida. The wooden shrimp boat was carrying a maximum of 5000 gallons of diesel when the incident occurred. Three crew members were rescued and transported ashore. The vessel grounded on its rigging before sinking at 25 degrees, 16.8 minutes North, 080 degrees, 12.6 minutes West. Sheening from the hulk has been reported, but the extent is unknown. The Coast Guard and the owner are arranging for salvage and cleanup. NOAA has provided information on resources at risk, oil spill trajectories and weather to the Coast Guard and the Marine Sanctuary. CDR Bunn of the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary is onscene. USCG district 7.
