Fish pens, mussel lines and seaweed farms — moored structures that spread across coastal waters.
Fish farms and shellfish lines occupy growing areas of sheltered coastal water. They are anchored with lines that extend beyond the visible structure, may be marked only by small buoys, and can break loose in storms. Warnings announce new farms, their marking and lights, and farms or pens reported adrift.
Most aquaculture warnings come from coastal services — the Norwegian, Japanese and Chilean coasts among them — rather than the ocean-wide series.
