1. In the early morning hours of May 10, 1999, the 178-foot freighter Redfin, owned by Western Pioneer of Seattle, ran aground at the entrance to Cold Bay incurring a small hole in the her bow. Roughly 100 gallons of lube oil and diesel leaked from the vessel. The Redfin was taking on water in the bow thruster space, although bilge pumps were neutralizing that inflow. Eventually 22,000 gallons of fuel were transferred from the fore to the aft tanks. After lightering approximately 40,000 gallons of fuel to the tug Alaskan Mariner, the Redfin floated free at the high tide. No further loss of fuel occurred. USCG district 17.
