Source report excerpt: “USCG conducted an overflight on Friday 8/9/2024. The pilots reported some debris at the site and weathered sheening as seen in the pictures. Much of the sheen was difficult to distinguish from current streaking due to the lack of color. At this time the USCG is not planning on taking any response action due to the depth of the water, and the risk/reward this kind of operation would pose. NMFS expressed concern regarding the purse seine nets; however, USCG stated that further action to deal with the net was outside of their authority. NMFS is looking into previous cases where the responsible party has conducted side scan sonar surveys of the site to determine the fate of the net and vessel. […]”
